The Salkantay to Classic Inca Trail Expedition is a mesmerizing journey that blends the raw beauty of the Salkantay mountain with the historical legacy of the Inca Trail. As you embark on this expedition, expect to be enchanted by the varying terrains, from snowy peaks and lush jungles to mystical cloud forests.
Along the way, the whispers of ancient Inca stories will beckon as you tread paths once used by the legendary civilization. The expedition is both physically challenging and spiritually rewarding, demanding endurance and resilience. It offers an immersive experience, introducing trekkers to the local folklore, age-old traditions, and vibrant ecosystems.
Concluding the trek, a feeling of accomplishment awaits, having successfully blended the exploration of nature’s grandeur with the rich tapestry of Inca heritage.
In the early hours, we’ll collect you from your hotel and set out on a 2:30-hour private bus journey to Mollepata, pausing for a breakfast stop. Optionally, we can halt at Limatambo town to admire the significant Inca religious remains at Tarawasi.
Continuing our drive, we reach the trailhead at Soraypampa (3,800mt). Following a brief orientation, our trek commences towards Salkantay pampa, a lunch spot framed by the icy peaks of Humantay Mountain (5902 m.). As dawn approaches, the majestic Apu Salkantay reveals itself in full splendor.
Navigating through the mountain range, we’ll find ourselves veering right of Salkantay, with Humantay to our left, Rayusca to our right, and the formidable Salkantay straight ahead. Our resting place for the night will be the campsite at Ichupata.
Awakening to an early call, you’ll be greeted with warm drinks while still nestled in your bed. We then embark on a gentle ascent to Inka Chiriasca, translating to “where the Inca cools down,” marking the trek’s highest point at 4,950 meters (16,236 feet).
From this vantage point, the awe-inspiring vistas of the snow-capped Salkantay peak, Humantay mountain, and a collection of naturally turquoise-colored lakes unveil themselves. Absorbing these breathtaking views, we then gradually descend to Pampacahuana, a quaint community home to an authentic Inka water channel. Here, amidst history and natural beauty, we’ll set up camp for the night.
After breakfast we hike in the direction of the ‘Paucarcancha’ Inca remains, and then towards the village of Wayllabamba lunch spot. Here we will join the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu and our mule drivers and mules will be replaced by porters. We continue on the trail to Yuncachimpa , where we will spend the night.
On the fourth day, we embark on the most challenging segment of our journey, ascending a total of 1,300m across two passes. Beginning in the cloud forest, the path steepens, leading us through changing terrains, from dense forests to barren grasslands. Oxygen becomes scarcer as we near the DEATH WOMAN PASS, intensifying the challenge.
The descent is swift, leading to a lunch break at PACAYMAYO. Our trek then takes us to the RUNKURAKAY Inca ruins, possibly an ancient guard post or lodge. Moving forward, we pass three mesmerizing black lakes, encounter the original Inca Trail steps, and explore significant ruins like SAYACMARCA.
The day concludes at CHAQUICOCHA, offering a peaceful respite with sweeping valley views.
At dawn, trekkers are awakened by bird melodies and nourished with a fulfilling breakfast. The journey leads through the lush cloud forest, showcasing stunning vistas of the Cordillera Oriental’s snow-peaks. Along the way, the ancient Phuyutamarca Inca ruins are explored before descending to the Wiñay Wayna campsite, where an exquisite sunset awaits.
The following day offers a gentler pace, winding through an Inca tunnel and leading to the “town in the clouds,” PHUYUPATAMARCA. The trail then descends through a humid cloud forest, marked by thousands of steps, ending at the historical WIÑAYWAYNA ruins and campsite.
Today, our destination is Machu Picchu. We set out early, aiming to reach Inti Punku (the Sun Gate) as dawn graces Machu Picchu. This journey covers a gentle 5 kilometers of undulating terrain. From the Sun Gate, Machu Picchu’s ancient Inca site is a brief stroll away.
Upon arrival, take a moment to rest and immerse yourself in the panoramic views. Subsequently, our guide will lead you on an enlightening tour of the site. After your exploration, head down to Machupicchu town at your leisure, enjoy a meal, and relax before your train departs.
